Curriculum
At St Mary’s, we believe that learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures.
The teaching should enable children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping children to study and work in other countries.
Pupils are taught by our specialist French teacher for 1 hour per week. Skills and language acquisition is planned progressively and as the children move into Years 5 and 6 (taught in Autumn 1 and 2 and Spring 1) they become more confident in listening to, speaking and writing in French. Our specialist teacher is employed by us from ‘Le club Francais’ and also offers after school Spanish via our language club.
